Have you ever been at a big party where you only know one person, the language is something that you don’t really speak, and where you don’t want to cling to said person because you think they should have a good time and not be there to entertain yourself?
What would you do? Especially after all the other foreigners left and the locals are to drunk to make sense in English…

OMG I know exactly what you mean! I was at this Swedish party last week where I knew 1 person (my friend / neighbour). But a game of Kubb (at first) and lots of alcohol (later) gave me the opportunity to get aquainted with lots of other people. And it turned out to be a great party for the both of us
I just love these parties where you only now a few people!

Been there done that. It sucks! When I was just learning Danish, I could only be a characterless boring humourless conversationalist – I simply didn’t have the language for jokes or deep discussions. I hate it, it made me feel uncomfortable, lonely and a bit stupid. Luckily, with an English boyfriend, I am never in a situation like that anymore, all his friends and family speak English – even when they’re drunk!! He, on the other hand, is in that kind of situation regularly though

I try. In French, I try. Then, when I’ve properly introduced myself I can be assured that after two minutes of random conversation people will mainly want to speak of my drug (obvious, being Dutch) habits.

I know that feeling well. When your language skill extend to discussing the weather and buying groceries it is difficult to express any personality to a room full of Drunk people. My solution is to get even more drunk than everyone else and offer them a nonstop weather report. Just like BBC news 24
